Dealing With Headaches and Migraines

try chiropractic care for headache and migraine relief

Headaches are not fun, and migraines are another level of awful. Living with either of these issues can make you feel grumpy, and in the worst-case scenario, leave you unable to function. Medication can help in the short term, but when the problem is ongoing or re-occurring, pills are not enough. Oftentimes, the source of your headaches and migraines is structural, and therefore with proper treatment it is possible to permanently overcome this debilitating issue. Headache relief at our Willowbrook chiropractic clinic may be the solution your looking for.

Headaches and Migraines in Willowbrook

Whether you are dealing with a persistent ache in your head, or the worst symptoms associated with migraines, including light and noise intolerance, nausea, vomiting, hallucinations, depression, and irritation the cause may be a structural issue. When the spine moves out of position because of developmental issues, trauma, repetitive stress, and other incidents, it can put pressure on the surrounding nerves. When the nerves are compressed or irritated, they send a message to the muscles of the back, neck, and jaw to tighten.

This tightness can lead directly to an acute headache or migraine. Over time the tightness can also pull your bones out of alignment leading to more persistent headaches and migraines. A headache or migraine can be a sign that there are deeper problems arising in your spinal column, and because every other system in your body is impacted by your spinal health, it is very important to deal with these issues when the signs begin to arise.

Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches and Migraines

Chiropractic care has a long history of successfully treating headaches and migraines. Chiropractors have an extensive understanding of subtle issues occurring in the spine which, due to its connection with the nervous system, is very often the source of pain. A chiropractic treatment starts with a thorough evaluation that will rule out other possible causes of your headache and examine your spine for issues of misalignment.

The assessment will determine the exact type of treatment that is necessary for the specific issue at the root of the pain. Using gentle and non-invasive techniques a chiropractor is able to achieve adjustments to the spine that, although they may seem subtle, can provide almost instant relief and restore your long-term health. Unlike medications which treat the problem on the surface level and provide only short-term relief, a chiropractic adjustment will address the cause of your headache or migraine and provide lasting results that will improve your quality of life.

Q & A With Dr. Chris Menton

What is a migraine?
Migraines are painful, recurring headaches that often come with other symptoms. Some of the symptoms of migraines include:

  • Throbbing or pounding pain
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Pain on the side of the head that spreads
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Numbness or weakness
  • Irritability

The pain and discomfort of a migraine are intense and last for up to 72 hours. After a migraine headache stops, patients often experience loss of mental sharpness, increased fatigue, or increased neck pain, even after it's over.

What causes migraines?
Researchers believe that migraines involve changes in blood flow to the brain, but no exact cause is known. Before a migraine attack, blood vessels narrow, reducing blood flow. Then the blood vessels enlarge and send blood flowing to the brain, causing the pain.

While researchers don't know the reason migraines occur, they've found that many migraines are linked to triggers. Triggers can be foods, smells, chemicals, behaviors, lights, noises, stress, lack of sleep, and medications. One of the challenges of helping patients with migraines is helping them find and avoid their triggers. Migraines and genetics are also connected.

How are migraines treated?
Migraines are usually treated with medication, but medications for migraines have long lists of side effects and aren't always effective. Dr. Menton provides a more natural approach that's just as, or more, effective than medication.

The main goal of migraine treatment is prevention. Dr. Menton helps patients find and learn to avoid triggers. Changes in diet, water intake, and lifestyle habits can help many patients reduce their risk of a migraine attack.

Spinal manipulation also helps treats migraines. In a recent study, almost half the participants reported a significant reduction in the intensity of their migraines, and many reported more than 90% reduction in attacks. In several studies, researchers found that chiropractic care was as effective as medication for treating migraine headaches. As a bonus, chiropractic care has none of the side effects of medication.

Migraine control may be as simple as regular chiropractic adjustments. Patients struggling with the intense migraine pain should contact Dr. Menton at Complete Health Chiropractic to discuss treatment options.
